Esterhazy princes collectors

The Pinacothèque of Paris presents masterpieces from the collection of the princes Esterházy, fifty paintings illustrating the exceptional taste and splendor of the great Hungarian aristocrats. This collection, one of the most famous in Europe in the nineteenth century, now forms part of the collection of paintings from the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest who provided the French public to discover for the first time.

Hungarian noble family whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, Esterházy, were loyal to the imperial crown of the Habsburgs, working both in the army and in the administration.

From the xvii ^th century, the Esterházy princes - the greater palatine Paul and Nicolas I ^er "the beautiful" - built their collection of art as evidence of their magnificence. During the Enlightenment, the collection reached its apogee with Nicolas II, patron and connoisseur;at his death, it includes 1156 masterpieces.

Nicolas II first considers his gallery ideal in the family castle of Eisenstadt. This building, too small, is neglected in favor of Castle Pottendord. The Napoleonic wars and natural disasters do not however carry out this project. The traveling collection was first installed in the castle in Laxenburg near Vienna, and then joined the Austrian capital.

The artists, the educated elite and distinguished travelers are dazzled. For the sake of patriotism, the collection was moved in 1865 in Budapest (Pest also called at that time). In the financial embarrassment, the Esterházy family is finally resolved to sell the Hungarian state in 1870.

IIt forms from the heart of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.

We can discover paintings from Tintoret ( The Emmaus pliigrims), Bernardo Strozzi ( Annonciation), Raphael ( Virgo and the Child), Tiepolo ( Saint-Jacques) , Bartoloméo Esteban Murillo ( The Holy Family and Saint Jean Baptiste), Francisco de Zurbaran , Le Lorrain , Jean Bruegel l'Ancien, Lucas Cranach .

Coupled with this exhibition is the one of the Romanovs, the tsars collectors.

The Romanovs, the Hermitage and the birth of a museum

Formed from the late seventeenth century, the imperial Russian collections became quickly one of the largest in Europe.

The chronological presentation begins with the works assembled by Peter the Great (1672-1725). Peter I. dispatches agents throughout Europe to bring paintings and sculptures in St. Petersburg.

Then Catherine II (1729-1796), in the philosophy of the Enlightenment, enriches the collections and built the first space dedicated to the presentation: The Small Hermitage, built next to the Winter Palace. This building soon became inadequate to house a number of works steadily rising and the Great Chapel was built shortly after, from 1771 to 1787.
Alexander I (1777-1825), grand-son of Catherine II, also prints its mark in the imperial collections, notably by giving the Hermitage with a superb collection of Spanish masters.

Finally, Nicolas I (1796-1855) whose reign was marked by the construction of the New Hermitage (1842-1852), following the burning of the Winter Palace in 1837.

Within two centuries, the Romanovs have developed one of the finest collections in the world and built a modern museum, open to the public in 1805.

We can discover paiintings of Rembrandt ( David andJonathan), Pierre-Paul Rubens ( portrait of George Gage), Antoine Van Dyck ( Saint-Thomas), Nicolas Poussin ( Vénus, faune et putti), Jean-Baptiste Greuze ( Portrait of a young man with a hat), Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin , Bartoloméo Esteban Murillo (Annonciation), Diego Velasquez (portrait of the Count of Olivares), Titian (Christ Tout-Puissant), Guirlandaio ( portrait of an old man)...

Coupled with this exhibition, the one of the Esterhazy, the Princes collectors.

The Orient of Women by Christian Lacroix

The Orient of Women by Christian Lacroix

This exhibition , real hymn to Oriental women, presents 150 traditional costumes of the Middle East, all selected by the designer Christian Lacroix.

We enter the world of fabulous wealth of Syria, Egypt, Turkey (cf Istanbul ), Palestine ... We discover urban clothes, silk brocade embroidered with gold and silver, and rural clothes for nomadic life , more simpler but no less beautiful in linen and cotton.

Embroidery, seroual, caftans, tunics ... these outfits have inspired many a designer and have come up today.

The clothes offered are from the collections of the Quai Branly and a private collection, Mrs Widad Kamel Kawar .

Thank you to them and Christian Lacroix for giving us the benefit of his expert eye and talent to select them.

Picasso to Warhol: Twelve modern masters

The High Museum of Art of Atlanta is working with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, for this major exhibition "Picasso to Warhol: Twelve
modern masters" beginning October 15, 2011 through April 2012.

This exhibition will present approximately 100 works of art created by 12 masters from the 20th century: Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Constantin Brancusi, Piet Mondrian, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio De Chirico, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol.

Invention of Cubism, emergence of abstraction and development of Surrealism...will be presented . Highlights of the exhibition include:

• Henri Matisse’s “Dance (I),” 1909
• Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before a Mirror,” 1932, and “Night Fishing at Antibes,” 1939
• Jasper Johns’s “Map,” 1961
• Andy Warhol’s “Self-Portrait,” 1966
• Constantin Brancusi’s “Bird in Space,” 1928
• Jackson Pollock’s, “Number 1A,” 1948

To enable this masterpiece of the Renaissance to finally be admired by all, the Louvre launches for the first time a major campaign to appeal to the generosity on the theme: "All patrons".

This picture, remained in private hands since it was painted in 1531, is available for sale by its current owner. The astonishing perfection of the work, its very rare and remarkable state of preservation allowed to classify "national treasure".

This status gives the museum a period of thirty months to meet the four million needed for its acquisition.
Thanks to the generosity of Mazars, an international audit and advisory firm and a second patron, complemented by the museum purchase credits, three-quarters of this sum has already been met.

15 November 2010 to January 31, 2011, the Louvre is implementing a campaign to appeal to the donation from individuals and businesses to complete funding.

Famous subject in antiquity, the Three Graces often personify joy, abundance and splendor. Lucas Cranach, the crossroads of Northern realism of painters and imagination more velvety of Italian painting, proposes a very personal version and intentionally ironic.
This table joins a remarkable but flawed works of Lucas Cranach. The Louvre does indeed retain some paintings by the artist, including three portraits, a painting mythological and Venus standing in a landscape, none of these works does not have the expressive power of the Three Graces.
All patrons
To allow this beautiful and touching work, which belongs to the collective imagination, to be finally revealed to the public, the Louvre needs of each. Any donation, whatever its amount, will be decisive.
To thank individual donors for specific recognition devices are offered in addition to tax reductions (thanks louvre.fr registered on the media and dedicated communication, presentation of the table before the first visit private collections, etc..), the enterprises will benefit from exceptional tax advantages, specific to the acquisition of national treasures, and counterparts in terms of visibility and public relations.

This exhibition is the first major event devoted to the period comprising the reigns of Charles VIII (1483-1498) and Louis XII (1498-1515), dominated by the personality of Anne de Bretagne, successively wife of the two kings.

Through more than 200 masterworks, the exhibition makes it possible to paint a clearer picture of this moment when France is at the crossroads of many paths. The works of the greatest painters of the period are the subject of several outstanding groups, such as tables and the Master of Moulins, aka Hey John, the painter "French" the most famous of this period, with loans of prestigious Chicago, Munich, Brussels, Paris or Autun.

Three sections structure the exhibition

1) For the sources of creation: clients and artists
This first section shows how the meeting of art lovers and artists has been a source of creation. Without wishing to present an exhaustive"tour de France" , the exhibition highlights a few significant outbreaks such as the Loire Valley, where the rulers stay, Bourbonnais, driven by great princes, Normandy, Champagne, Languedoc, where ... commands generate individual and collective creation.
2) The image in all its forms
While the recent invention of printing enables the delivery of images and ornaments on a large scale , creators speak out on recent and new media like the book and the printed image but also the medal or enamel paints.
3) North-South Trade
The latter part of the exhibition, designed crescendo gives to see the encounter between men, works and shapes, some with their roots locally, others from the north or south.
Artists settle in France or work temporarily; works are imported, witnesses to the vitality of certain products (eg Antwerp altarpieces), but also the interests of French collectors.

Some special loans from the Louvre and the Art Institute of Chicago recalled that the king of France and his entourage had before 1515, acquired works of painters named Andrea Solari, Baccio della Porta (Fra Bartolomeo) or Leonardo da Vinci.

Exhibition organized by the RMN and the Art Institute of Chicago, conducted in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre, the Cluny Museum - Museum of the Middle Ages and the National Museum of the Renaissance castle Ecouen, with special assistance from National Library of France.
It will be presented at the Art Institute of Chicago from February 26 to May 29, 2011.

Dolls for Darfur

Each year since 2003, designers are making Frimousses. These dolls are sold by auction; it allows UNICEF to support vaccination campaigns, particularly in Darfur.

Figures are important: 40 000 € in 2003, 185,700 in 2006, 192,900 in 2007, 227,000 in 2008 and 285,000 in 2009.

This year's thema is the Cinema ... and many designers will create dolls: Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Agnes b., Antik Batik, Baccarat, Dolce & Gabbana, Chantal Thomass, Christian Dior, Emilio Pucci, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Jean-Claude Jitrois, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Missoni, Prada, Sonia Rykiel, Torrente, Poiray ...

These little dolls are presented at the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux Arts de la Ville, Avenue Winston Churchill ... and the auction will be held Dec. 7 at Drouot Montaigne.

Manga matisse in Nice

The exhibition at the Museum Draw! offers an original presentation of visitors and collections of the Musée Matisse in the form of a comic book produced by Christophe Girard, entitled Matisse Manga (Les Enfants Rouges edition, September 2010).
Christophe Girard, cartoonist, art teacher at Villa Thiole, Municipal School of Fine Arts in Nice , spent a month in the summer of 2009, to observe and "chew" Matisse museum visitors.
He proposes fifty-one plates, ink and watercolor, in which the visitor is the main character. His artistic vision and humorous black and white, has obtained the agreement of the Matisse heirs.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice presents the Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang.
Internationally renowned artist, Cai Guo-Qiang scored minds in recent years, notably in 2008 with the opening and closing of the Beijing Olympics and his solo exhibitions at the Guggenheim in New York and Bilbao.

The Achievement of Travels In The Mediterranean, a drawing of28 meter long specially designed for the exhibition and made with pigments and gunpowder, will be done in a performance in the former slaughterhouse in Nice before being presented to the museum before a gathering of water. Performed in public, this poetic and sensual fresco describes the feeling of a student from Shanghai to discover Côte d'Azur.

A huge wreck of 15 meters length filled with bone china, pulled out of the water and then reconstructed for each exposure by 7 fishermen of Iwaki in Japan will invite the viewer to another spiritual and sensory experience based on the trip.

Finally, the projection of five large format videography provides an overview of his work pyrotechnics, immersing the viewer in this work strongly dramatic and grandiose. Both educational and spiritual, this exhibition is displayed as a unique event that will mark the Riviera landscape and internationally.

Since its creation in 1980, Grand Prix Paris Match for photojournalism celebrates the photojournalist of the year. Organized by Olivier Royant, managing editor of Paris Match, this award is an opportunity to offer the public a vision of multiple world in which we live.

Placed this year under the presidency of Jean-Luc Monterosso, and composed of professional photographers and image, the jury of the 16th Grand Prix elected the story of Olivier Laban-Mattei on Haiti. Moreover, the special mention "Warwick Escape" Kasia Wandycz reward for his report "happy peasants".
