The city was in a dazzling period of growth. New York was the port of entry to the American continent and immigration was in full swing. English, Irish, Scottish, and then Germans…as they fled misery and famine in Europe, all of them had one destination in mind : New York.

was the city of everyone’s dreams. There were sumptuous hotels, and luxury rubbed elbows with poverty. It hardly mattered.
