Giovanni da Verrazzano , a person born in Tuscany, was sent by King of France  to open a passage to the Orient through the new lands of America.This is how, sailing under the flag of France, he reached the bays of New York and Narragansett in 1524.

Since then, a lot of immigrants came in New York: French, Dutch, English...all wishing to be wealthy in this new world...

On April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall, thereby becoming the first American president.
New York
did not remain national capital for long.Despite being passed over as national capital, New York’s economic surged again.
The city was in a dazzling period of growth. New York was the port of entry to the American continent and immigration was in full swing. English, Irish, Scottish, and then Germans…as they fled misery and famine in Europe, all of them had one destination in mind : New York.
 
New York
was the city of everyone’s dreams. There were sumptuous hotels, and luxury rubbed elbows with poverty. It hardly mattered.

From 1910 to 1930, there was a massive migration of a million and a half African-Americans (10% of the total population) to the industrial cities of the North. In a phenomenon accelerated by the war industries, important black communities that later became ghettos were created. New York’s black community was part of this overall shift.
